William Dowling, worked for and was trained by Harry Clarke, taking over as manager of the Harry Clarke stained glass studios after his masters passing.
This 77x67cm oil on canvas depicts Milesian warriors (the last settlers of Ireland according to Lebor Gabála Érenn, the book of invasions) charging into battle, possibly Conn of the hundred battles, High King of Ireland.
Dowling is well known for his study of horses as can be seen in many of his other works. Passing away in 1980, this painting is most likely from his later period. Provence Adams, Dublin.
